HISTORY

In 1994, David Perrell & Bill Feldner noticed a real need in the town of Hilo to feed and care for the growing number of homeless, or houseless, individuals and families.  So they started Under His Wings Street Ministry in Hilo, Hawaii.  They were joined by Moses Gonsalves, Chuck Parker, Parlo, Joyce Higashi, and Charley Ikeda as part of the initial group of volunteers.

In 1997, Bill Feldner's mother, Susan Feldner,
also known as Gramma Sue,
was sent by God from New Jersey to help her son with the mission.

Other staff and volunteers at the time included:

Napolean "Boya" Kenoi
Michael "Tony" Miller
Herbert "Bruddah Herb" Alvarez
Clara "Sistah Clara" Alvarez

In 2005, Sistah Clara was appointed to take over as Administrator after Gramma Sue got into a serious vehicle accident.

There were countless people over the years that assisted with the mission as volunteers, staff, and benefactors, many of whom were themselves homeless at some time in their life. What is most beautiful about the mission is how all the individuals involved were seen as part of a family, or ohana.

The short list below is only a fraction of the people who have helped with the mission:

Pastor Charles "Puff" Kama & Mapu
Lester & Suzie Chun
Glenn & Amy
Allen & Nancy
Daniel & Antoinette
John Nabarro
Paul Alves
